This is an exceptional figure in that it features an ivory head, hands and feet. Ivory was often used by the Vietnamese to make saint figures since ivory is so much more precious a material and therefore represents the reverence with which these figures were held. Although ivory is not uncommonly used it is far less common than wood. This figure is also extraordinary in its use of a very dense tropical wood for the figure. It appears to be ebony although that is not confirmed.
